CASE STUDY C
DAF Treatment
Odour  Reduction

Results:

Elimination of odours from DAF sludge holding tank.

Background

A Southern Ontario dairy plant uses a DAF to clean the wastewater of contaminants.  The sludge is scraped from the back of the DAF into a hopper which is then pumped to a holding tank.  The tank was then emptied once per week.

The tank is vented at the top and as the sludge was pumped into the tank the displaced air would be forced out the top.  The resulting odours from the sludge caused complaints from neighbours and fear of product contamination especially during the summer months.

The treatment process was a continual feed of diluted BCL-4000 and a daily addition of BCP-80 to the sludge prior to the tank.

Discussion:

The treatment commenced in December 2004 and has run continuously since.  The tank now has no odour when it is being filled or emptied.  The summer of 2005 saw record temperatures and through this the treatment continued to work and the plant experienced no odour issues or complaints.
